About

Castello dei Rampolla

Castello dei Rampolla is a prominent estate located in Panzano in Chianti, Florence, Tuscany. The vineyards cover 33 hectares spread over Toscana and Chianti. Since 1994, farming has been converted to biodynamic farming. Luca Di Napoli is the owner and the manager of the winery. Castello dei Rampolla produces elegant, charming wines with rich flavours and balanced aromas. The top wines of the estate are Toscana D’Alceo, Toscana Sammarco and Chianti Classico. The Chianti Classico 2020 awarded 2 red glasses by Gambero Rosso. Gambero Rosso comments on the wines of the estate: “Nose with autumn suggestions for the Chianti Classico 2020 with aromas of wet earth, flowers and small red fruits and with a fresh and inviting taste. Sammarco 2018, a blend based on Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, tastes of undergrowth and spices, and the taste is broad, juicy and sapid.” The Toscana D’Alceo 1999 scored 99, the Toscana Sammarco 2008 scored 98, and the Chianti Classico 2019 scored 93 by the Wine Advocate. Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Toscana D’Alceo 1999: “The monumental 1999 Vigna d'Alceo is a 20,000-bottle Cuvée of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese aged in oak. It boasts an exceptionally provocative nose of liquid minerals, graphite, plums, creme de cassis, and cherry liqueur. It is fabulously concentrated yet remarkably light on its feet, with medium to full body, sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of flavour nuances. There is plenty of glycerin in this rich but neither heavy nor overbearing effort. This is a thrilling tour de force! However, it requires cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. Bravo!”

History

Castello dei Rampolla is a family estate owned and managed by Luca Di Napoli, assisted by his sister Laurizia. Marcus Edler von der Planitz is the winemaker. The property was founded in the 13th century and has been in the Di Napoli family's possession since 1739, but the lands were used mainly for farming. Alceo Di Napoli and his wife, Livia Borgia, made the decision to plant Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese vines in 1965. In 1975 the first bottles of Chianti Classico, labelled Castello dei Rampolla, were produced. Since that time, the family has constantly increased its vineyards and modernised winemaking techniques.

Approach

Castello dei Rampolla’s vineyards are farmed according to the biodynamic approach, not certified. The only treatments based on copper, sulphur and propolis are applied. The grape variety is represented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Merlot, Trebbiano, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia, and GewurzTraminer. In the cellars, a gentle oak regime is implemented. The Toscana D’Alceo is vinified for 3 months in concrete tanks. For the next 12 to 15 months, the wine spends in barrels with no toast or medium toast, followed by 18 to 24 months in bottles.
