About
Domaine Bruno Lorenzon
The estate of Domaine Bruno Lorenzon covers 9 hectares in total, 6 hectares in the Mercurey appellation and 3 hectares in the Montagny appellation. It is located in Mercurey, Côte Chalonnaise, Burgundy. Bruno Lorenzon, the current winemaker farms the vineyards according to a biodynamic principle.
Bruno Lorenzon’s white wines have exceptional purity and persistence, a perfect balance between exceptional intensity, a magical palette of flavours and tension which resonates throughout. His reds are relatively powerful interpretations of Pinot.
The top wines of the domaine are: Mercurey Premier Cru Pièce 15, Mercurey Premier Cru Pièce 13, and Mercurey Premier Cru Clos de Champs Martin Cuvée Carline.
The Mercurey Premier Cru Pièce 15 2014 scored 96, the Mercurey Premier Cru Pièce 13 2019 scored 95+, and the Mercurey Premier Cru Clos de Champs Martin Cuvée Carline 2019 scored 95 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Mercurey Premier Cru Pièce 15 2014: “Even in the context of a brilliant tasting, Lorenzon's 2014 Mercurey Premier Cru Pièce 15 stood out. Unwinding in the glass with scents of crisp Anjou pear, green apple, mirabelle plums, hazelnuts and oyster shell, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its satiny attack segueing into an ample but chiseled mid-palate. Seamless and complete, it concludes with a long, unerringly precise finish. I could barely contain myself when, a few days after this tasting, I happened upon several magnums for sale.”
History
1997
Bruno Lorenzon, the third generation winemaker, has been the winemaker at Domaine Bruno Lorenzon since 1997.
One of the higher-profile Mercurey domaines, despite its small size. Bruno Lorenzon has premier cru vineyards in Les Croichots and Champs Martin with a special cuvée of the latter known as Cuvée Carline, named after his sister.
Bruno Lorenzon obtained a degree in oenology. He started to develop his domaine in Mercurey in 1997. On the label, there is written ‘L▢renzon’ which Bruno Lorenzon says suits his ‘four-square’ personality.
Approach
Biodynamic
Bruno Lorenzon farms the vineyards according to non-certified biodynamic principles. Around 60 percent of all the wines made at the domaine are red.
In the vineyards, no herbicides were used for more than 30 years. The soils are ploughed by a light tractor, in order to avoid compaction, the soils are aerated in the spring in order to release the nitrogen necessary for the plant to reach its maximum size, but also to control weeds with a system inter-stock ploughing.
The vineyards are planted with 14,000 to 20,000 vines per hectare. Kept at 1.8 metres, and never deleafed. The whole requires 800 man-hours per hectare, according to Bruno Lorenzon’s calculations.
Bruno Lorenzon is an acknowledged master, and carefully manages oxygen, carbon dioxide and sulphur levels in the cellar.
All barrels come from the Tonnellerie de Mercurey, in which Bruno has an involvement, but he has cut back the amount of new wood from earlier years. He uses 500-litre barrels for whites.
